What is ICT?

  • Information and Communications Technology is concerned with the handling of electronic information (which can consist of text, numbers, images and sounds) and involves creating, collecting, holding, processing, presenting and communicating this information in a variety of ways for a variety of purposes.
  • ICT is about information that can be manipulated with computers, video recorders and photocopiers, sounds through tape recorders and other signals generated and received by satellite technology.
  • ICT capability refers to a child’s ability to draw on their knowledge and understanding of ICT to apply it in a variety of contexts.

Aims

  • To encourage pupils at Moulsford to use ICT confidently and purposefully in all appropriate areas of the curriculum
  • To develop pupils' ability to use information sources and ICT tools to help them find, explore, develop, analyse, exchange and present information
  • To use ICT in support of problem solving, investigative and expressive work
  • To teach pupils to make informed judgements about when and how to apply aspects of ICT to achieve maximum benefit
  • To help pupils to understand the implications of ICT for working life and for society

Prep

Prep is not often set in ICT, although occasionally pupils will be asked to collect information in their own time for projects

Equipment

Pupils will often find it necessary to work on projects, like Common Entrance Geography, at home. It will be of great benefit if they are provided with a suitably named USB memory stick so that they can transfer work between home and school computers.

Monitoring of use

The boys’ network folders are monitored closely as is their internet usage. Anyone found to have searched for, or saved inappropriate material will have their rights to use the computers taken away for a period of time agreed by the Head of ICT and the boy’s form tutor.

Reception

Explore
Learn to explore a variety of software packages, developing mouse skills. Control a turtle to move around the screen. Navigate websites and play games with a mathematical focus.

Cubs

Using for a purpose
ICT work this term is linked to Geography class work. The boys will meet ‘Dylan and Dave Dragon’ who enjoy visiting hot places around the world. They will create digital postcards, stories and use digital maps to locate the dragons’ current position in the world.

Lions

Developing skills
To type for longer periods of time. To create simple multimedia presentations using ‘2Create a Story’ software. To review and improve work and comment on the work of others. To consider audience when creating work.

Year 3

Text and Graphics
Children’s work this term will focus on data handling using a variety of software. They will record information using tables and charts and learn how to generate graphs from this. All of the work will in the context of ‘Cars’.

Year 4

Communicating
Children are embarking on a larger project this term- “The Moulsford Advertising Campaign”. The boys will learn to create various printable adverts using a variety of software. They will also have the opportunity to create short video advertisements.

Year 5

Super Heroes
Children will be focussing on data handling this term. They will explore, create and search databases finding information from a variety of sources including Excel spreadsheets and the internet. All of their work will be within the context of ‘Superheroes’.

Year 6

Information reliability, validity and bias
The children will be learning about internet usage with an emphasis on assessing the reliability and validity of information found. They will also consider bias and opinion. These skills will be applied while they research and present upon a chosen issue.

Year 7

Dragon’s Den and Scratch
Year 7 will be taking part in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style project. They will begin by choosing a concept for a product which they wish to develop, this might be an invention, a computer game, a vehicle or a company. They will then create a logo and a slogan developing an understanding of brand awareness. The next stage will be to research existing products and create an ideas board showing elements of these products that they will incorporate in their own designs. After this, they will begin to advertise their product in the form of a website and video advertisments. Following this stage they will use spreadsheets to handle finance and finally present to a panel of ‘Dragons’.

The second Year 7 group, will be learning some simple programming techniques, within the ‘Scratch’ environment. They will create simple animations and games using the commands that they have learnt.
