Parents Event

Gaming, YouTube and Social Media

On Thursday evening over 50 parents attended a virtual talk from Alan MacKenzie, an online safety specialist. Alan takes a pragmatic, non-judgemental and supportive approach and his talk brought parents right up-to-date about opportunities and risks in the online world. The talk discussed the main activities of children and young people, such as gaming, YouTube and social media, and highlighted ways in which parents can learn more about the online behaviour of their children.

He focused on four key topics:

  • Content (what are they watching and playing?)
  • Contact (who are they engaging with online?)
  • Conduct (what are their behaviours?)
  • Commercial (where and how is the money made?)

Alan talked about the effect of lockdown on screentime and how online behaviours have changed since the start of the pandemic. It was a fascinating and insightful talk and the parents all felt that they had learnt something. A link to the talk will be available next week.

Alan will be running workshops for all of the boys in Years 6 to 8 in a few weeks.
