Head's Blog: Exam Preparation

Head's Blog

November and June are generally the only two months of the year during which we are in school without a break (e.g. no half-term or holidays), and the former, in particular, provides an outstanding opportunity to get ahead both in and out of the classroom, early in the academic year. We have been delighted by how the children have settled back into school after the half-term break, and there has been a real sense of purpose at school this week.

Preparing the Prep School boys for the senior schools’ admissions process is core to the Moulsford experience, and we aim to ensure the boys are well informed about what lies ahead, are given the skills to put them in the strongest possible position, and most importantly are calm throughout the process. Such preparation takes pace subliminally throughout the boys’ time at Moulsford, and things are particularly busy at present for many boys in Years 6 and 7 who are sitting Pre-Tests and/or visiting schools for interviews.

A wonderful feature of Moulsford boys is that they are articulate, polite and very proud of their school. This immediately puts them on the front foot when talking with senior school staff, but we are keen that we don’t leave these experiences to chance. As part of the interview preparation process, Moulsford harnesses the wisdom and knowledge of three highly experienced retired Heads, all of whom have an excellent grasp of the nuances of the senior schools’ admissions journey. Veronica Gibbs, Rob Williams and James Womersley, who were Heads of The Dolphin, Bishopsgate and Beaudesert Park schools respectively, ensure that boys leave their mock interview sessions with confidence and constructive feedback.

Parents of girls in the Pre-Prep can rest assured that advice for onward schools in Year 3 will equally be independent, well-considered and tailored to each individual.

As a ‘stand-alone’ school, Moulsford gives parents completely independent advice on the next stage of your child’s education, and every year we are sending boys to roughly fourteen different schools in Year 9.
