Year 5 Play

Our Year 5 pupils brought ancient Greece roaring to life in their recent production of Young Zeus, a truly entertaining production that showcased the talent and dedication of every child involved. Set in the primordial times of Greek mythology and focusing on the Titans and Olympians, the production was a fantastic blend of mythology, humour, and impressive performances that had the audience thoroughly engaged throughout.

The script, brilliantly written by our Director of Music, Karen Braden, and her equally talented husband, Ali, was packed with details from the historical setting alongside humour that landed with both children and adults alike. Watching a fast-paced recount of Rhea giving birth to the Olympian Gods, and Kronos deciding to eat them (well, jelly babies, anyway!) was definitely a highlight.

Every single Year 5 pupil played an integral part in both acting and singing, demonstrating exactly the commitment and courage which this endeavour fosters. Watching the children overcome their nerves, deliver their lines with confidence, and support one another throughout the rehearsal process was a real privilege and the boys should be very proud of their efforts. The amount of script they memorised was impressive, and their delivery showed just how much they had grown as performers.

Behind the scenes, the production was a true team effort. Some of the props were crafted by the pupils themselves in lesson time under the expert guidance of Mr McNaughton and Mrs Cummings, adding to the cross-curricular nature of the production, while Mrs Manning ensured that additional props and costumes brought the mythical world to life. The stunning set, designed and built by Mrs Beardall with assistance from Mr McNaughton and Mr Clements, really helped transport us to the classical architecture of Ancient Greece. Finally, having a live band in the form of Mrs Braden and Mr Squire on piano and Mr Mead on drums really elevated the evening performances and gave the pupils a very different experience to performing with backing tracks.
Young Zeus is yet another example of how our drama productions provide pupils with invaluable opportunities to build confidence, work collaboratively, and discover the joy of performing. As these Year 5 pupils continue their journey through the school, they will have further chances to develop their skills and passion for the Performing Arts, and if this production is anything to go by, we have much to look forward to.

A huge congratulations to the entire Year 5 cast and crew. You were all absolutely legendary! You can see photos from the play here.
