STEAM Week at Moulsford has once again brought energy, creativity and innovation to the heart of school life. This year’s theme, “The Greeks,” has provided a rich and fascinating backdrop to a wide variety of activities, demonstrating how Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics are deeply rooted in ancient history and how they continue to shape our world today. The beautiful display of artwork in the Art Room is a testament to the children’s enthusiasm for learning and their motivation to create their own pieces for our Greek exhibition. Mrs Cummings was delighted with the range of pictures, sculptures, mosaics and paintings.
One of the week’s highlights was the fantastic Year 5 play, which brilliantly mixed Greek mythology with great humour, confidence and flair. Meanwhile, all year groups had the opportunity to attend the Henley Literary Festival, engaging with a range of authors and ideas that broaden horizons and inspire a lifelong love of reading. Year 3 have enjoyed a morning of Art and Technology creating a ceramic model of Medusa and a labyrinth in DT for the Minotaur.
The spirit of STEAM was also alive in the activities programme, with boys taking part in junior and senior Cooking, creating delicious orange-flavoured Greek biscuits. In Year 7, a stage combat workshop linked the dramatic arts with physical expression, giving pupils the chance to learn the tricks of the trade and how to deliver a proper punch line! All pupils had the opportunity to work with a professional stunt man and fighter choreographer who taught them hand to hand stage fighting skills followed by an introduction to using swords. He gave the children an opportunity to design their own fight looking at how actors build their fighting scenes in stages. They had a lot of fun.
In assembly, Mr Noble and I explored how the influence of ancient Greece continues to echo in the modern curriculum — from democracy and philosophy to mathematics, architecture and theatre. It was a reminder that so many of the things we study today have roots in the ancient world and that innovation often builds on the achievements of the past.
Looking ahead, the musical soirees taking place next week will round off this celebration beautifully, highlighting the power of music as part of the wider STEAM curriculum.
However, while STEAM Week is a brilliant focal point in our first half term, it is only a snapshot of what happens all year round at Moulsford. Our curriculum is carefully designed to raise the profile of every subject and to give children a breadth of experience across all disciplines. Whether it’s coding, sculpture, debating, engineering challenges or STEM lessons, STEAM is part of the everyday learning here.
Through weeks like this and through the ongoing commitment of our teachers and pupils, Moulsford continues to champion curiosity, creativity and challenge across all areas of learning. We hope that your children have had a wonderful week celebrating STEAM.
