Eco-themed week of fun
Year 3 and 4 have had a busy Activities Week, which started at The Oxford Boat Adventure. Here the children spent two days having fun on the lake using the canoes and giant paddleboards and also honed their bushcrafting skills, complete with camouflaged faces!
For the rest of the week the children were split into their four houses Amundsen, Bering, Cabot and Drake and completed a carousel of six tasks with an eco-friendly theme.
In music, musical theatre singing was the order of the day with each house learning a different song and lines of dialogue from ‘Plastic Pirates’.
In cooking, the children made cheese and bacon scones, using all locally sourced ingredients, including cheese from the Nettlebed Creamery and eggs from Mr and Mrs Squire’s chickens.
The children enjoyed playing in the pool doing team building activities, making rafts out of mats and floats whilst Mr Skinner, Miss Browne and Mr Thorp threw dodgeballs at them!
After that it was ‘eco-sport’ where the children worked within their Houses to play a giant game of ‘The Floor is Lava’, having to cross the ‘lava’ whilst they were completing eco-related exercises such as doing a big puzzle of a solar panel.
In mini-raft building, the groups had to design and build a little raft using renewable and recyclable materials that could carry an egg across the creek and also design and make an eco-friendly egg drop.
In Art, the children used a plastic bottle to make an eco-pot; a little plastic plant pot that they then decorated to look like an animal. They then used their pots to plant basil seeds, creating a renewable food source.
To end the week the children all joined together to go on a nature walk to Wallingford, with a little stop off for ice lollies and a play.
During the week the Year 4 classes each spent a night in the Boarding House and Mr Albon reports that they were all superstars, joining in with all of the activities and making their own pizzas for tea.
It was a hugely busy week but the children (and staff) all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Well done everyone!
