Cross-Curricular projects for Year 7

This term the Year 7 pupils presented their Dragons Den projects to a panel of fierce Dragons in the theatre. The pupils were challenged to market a new product, idea or invention and the presentations were the culmination of a lot of hard work and effort over the term across the curriculum. This form of project-based learning is beneficial as it provides pupils with the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in a real-world context. The projects comprised many different elements with a key focus on:

ICT:
Website Creation: Designing and building a website provides the pupils with the opportunity to develop their digital skills and understand the significance of an online presence in effective marketing. Some of them really enjoyed using AI to create elements of their websites this year.

Design Technology:
Design Board: Creating a visual representation of their product's design helps the pupils communicate their ideas and demonstrates its benefits to potential investors.

Prototypes: Developing prototypes allows pupils to apply design principles and showcase their concepts more effectively. This year there were even some edible ones!

Drama and Art:
Promotional Advert: Filming and editing a promotional advert demands creativity and collaboration and communication skills.

Presentations: Developing presentation skills is crucial and using dramatic elements can help the them to communicate more effectively.

Financial Literacy:
Handling Finances: Working with the Maths department, the pupils learnt about proficiently managing company finances through spreadsheets, educating the children on budgeting and financial responsibility and learning valuable skills.

Pitching to the 'Dragons':
Confidence and Communication: presenting to a panel of ‘Dragons’ involves public speaking, gives the pupils experience of responding to challenging questions, and develops their critical thinking skills. Our thanks go to the staff who played the role of ‘Dragons’, giving up their valuable time and playing such an important part in the process.  It was lovely to welcome some new Dragons to the Board Room, including Mr Philpott the Bursar who gave the financials a thorough looking over!

There were lots of investments made and the excitement at making deals was evident. However, there were also some excellent ideas and professional pitches that did not get investment, but that was certainly not a reflection of the pupils’ efforts. Recognising that not all exceptional ideas secure investment is a crucial aspect of the learning process. It instils resilience and highlights the value of effort irrespective of outcomes.

Well done to the whole of Year 7 for your hard work!
