Head's Blog Activities

The After School Activities Programme has been in full swing this week and it has been lovely to see the boys taking advantage of the wonderful opportunities on offer, after a hard day’s work in the classroom. Encouraging boys to seek and trial a range of passions is so important in preparing them for the adult world, and the Moulsford extra-curricular programme is designed to expose boys to a wide breadth of interests.

It can be tempting to think that the road to life success lies in complete mastery (the 10,000 hours theory) of a narrow skillset to become the next Tiger Woods or Chris Frome. The reality is that few problems in our inter-connected modern world can be solved in isolation, and that those boys (and girls) who have developed a multi-disciplinary skillset will be extremely well placed to thrive and succeed as they progress through life.

Subtly instilling in your boys the ability to adapt, change direction, experiment and make surprising connections will give them invaluable life skills and open up fascinating opportunities for them. Take Charles Babbage (1791-1871), for example, the English polymath who was a mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer. His knowledge of the silk weaving industry inspired him to create the concept of the digital programmable computer. Medical schools now welcome applicants who have an Art background as it helps with dexterity and emotional intelligence.

Please encourage your boys to continue to step outside of their comfort zone, and as parents don’t get too concerned if at this stage in life they want to experiment with lots of activities rather than master just one. The new Playball curriculum, which we have introduced into the Pre-Prep, is designed to complement the Activities Programme, and to develop a range of transferable skills in the boys. Employers increasingly recognise the importance of a range of skills and experience and we want to ensure your boys are well prepared for life beyond Moulsford.
