Head's Blog: Activities Week 2025

What a fabulous week has been enjoyed by both parents and children.  The Moulsford Parents Association kicked it off with the most spectacular Summer Party last Saturday, the children (and staff) have all been superstars during Activities Week, and in between, the Summer Soirée committee gave the community an outstanding event raising very valuable funds for The Charlie Waller Trust on Tuesday.  To top it off, the sun has shone throughout!

Starting with the children, I would like to congratulate them all on fully embracing their respective Activities Week programmes.  At the time of writing, Year 6 have just got back from the Brecon Beacons and by all accounts had a fabulous time, with lots of smiling faces. Year 8 have just returned from Devon, Year 5 are due back shortly from Herefordshire and Year 7 are on their way back from Normandy.  Reports from all bases have been excellent, with the children making the most of the opportunities presented to them.

Back in Oxfordshire, Years 3, 4 and 5 have thoroughly enjoyed a combination of river activities, swimming, camping, crafting, baking and a very exciting first night boarding for Year 4.  And last but not least, Pre-Prep have had a great fun and successful week, with a highlight trip to Legoland on Tuesday.  Back in the office, 1400 photos have already been received and edited, and they’re still flowing in!  My enormous thanks go to all the staff across the board who make these trips such a success for your children – both those at the sharp end of the action, and those back at home who keep you in touch with everything! A good barometer of a happy and successful trip is how much the staff are enjoying themselves, and I am delighted to report that we have all had a great time this week, and everyone (staff and children) will sleep well this weekend!

I would like to share some words from an email received this afternoon from the manager of the residential centre where the Year 8s have been staying in Devon.  Martin Larrington retires shortly from the role, and wrote:

I have had the privilege of running St George’s House for the last 41 years.  I have led your school’s residential for the multiple occasions that you have been making trips to us. As I retire from the work, this week was my last with your school. The general demeanour and contact with your school staff over the years has been consistently outstanding.

I recognise that it is tremendously difficult to put together teams of staff to implement a positive ethos. I would like to encourage you that the staff team that ran this year’s residential are quite exceptional. Much of your work will be dealing with issues. I hope this will counter some of the difficulties that inevitably come your way.

Your staff’s care and concern for the boys is clearly evident. This is just what I love to see and it gives me great hope for the future of the school. The boys are very fortunate to have had their input. The boys’ general demeanour is a credit to you and how you run the school
I have thoroughly enjoyed the week. I hope and pray that the boys will take good memories to add to their time at Moulsford as well. They are a credit to you and the groundwork that has been delivered by your staff.

I could wax lyrically about each member of staff. They are diverse with a common thread of interest in individuals. Enough said. I wish you well for the future.

And now back to the parents, and the very special community events which have taken place for them this week.  Huge thanks go to the MPA Summer Party committee (Charlie Winckworth, Helen Bush, Jim Morris and Caroline Mortimer) for putting on such a spectacular evening last Saturday, creating a wonderful atmosphere that took us straight back to the 1980s. I was honoured to be asked to arrive in the DeLorean, which kickstarted a fantastic evening of laughter, fun, camaraderie, and dancing.  Do watch the edited video of the evening here - I believe planning has already started on the 2026 event!

The fabulous marquee on the front lawn served a double purpose by providing an equally stunning venue for the Summer Soirée on Tuesday.  Congratulations and thank you to the Soirée committee (Tilly Meynell, Clemmie Turner, Sarah Craig and Hannah Morris) for working so very hard to give the guests a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evening, and to the Moulsford community and beyond for giving so generously to raise significant funds for The Charlie Waller Trust.

The Flickr platform where images are normally stored is experiencing a few problems today – perhaps Activities Week overload?!  However, you can find a selection of albums here or click into the news stories below and you will find links to images from the week’s events.
