Head's Blog: Outdoor Learning, Play and Fun

Head's Blog

Last week, I wrote about our stunning grounds and the hard work that has gone into preparing them for the Summer Term. This week, with all the wonderful sunshine we’ve had, it has been great to see so much learning, play and fun outdoors.

Years 5 to 8 played their first cricket matches with a block fixture against Summer Fields, with some really well contested and close matches. At our Thursday assembly we acknowledged the excellent sportsmanship shown by a number of children on the pitch, with our sports staff linking their actions to our school values of Kindness, Courage and Curiosity.  Of course, it’s early days in the season, and it will be excellent to watch the teams develop over the coming months.

There has been no more idyllic place to be this week than the river, and the staff and children have loved the opportunity to practise their kayak, canoe and paddleboard skills in tropical conditions. In our pool, yesterday, we hosted The Oratory Prep for a Years 3 & 4 Swimming Gala with the sunshine, music and enthusiastic spectators really contributing to the carnival atmosphere. Many staff have relocated their lessons outdoors this week, and I have loved observing children learning Maths, Music and other subjects in a different environment. Do look out for Year 5’s chalked ‘data’ workings on the tarmac outside the theatre – what a great way to learn! I also know how much the Pre-Prep have enjoyed using my garden this week!

The removal of the marquee has provided me with a stunning view from my office window once again and I am beginning to look ahead to some of the events that take place on the front field in the latter part of the term. We will have Moulsford’s Got Talent and the Summer Concert and of course this year’s 80s themed Summer Party.

The MPA Ball/Party Committee are working incredibly hard behind the scenes and it promises to be another not-to-be-missed showstopper event. In order to give the organisers the opportunity to finalise arrangements, if you have not bought tickets yet then now is a great opportunity to do so, with the Bank Holiday ahead of you to start raiding your wardrobe for legwarmers and shoulder pads!
