Head's Blog: Role models

Head's Blog

Role models are an incredibly powerful influence and I am sure that we can all look back on those individuals from our past who have helped shaped our lives for the better. Sometimes this can be a relationship developed over time, but often the role model can be unaware of the great influence they have, simply by virtue of being older, wiser and approachable.

The positive influence that the older Moulsford boys have on the younger members of the school is tangible, and over time special and lasting relationships are formed. One obvious example is the buddy system by which the Year 3 boys are paired with a Year 7, to help the little ones settle into life in the prep school. The current Year 7 boys have already forged a strong bond with their smaller charges, and have been instrumental in introducing them to the ‘Moulsford Mint’. The ‘Mint’ is a pastoral tool we are rolling out, designed to give boys an opportunity to reflect on their feelings, and acts as an early warning system to staff should a boy be feeling unsettled. In summary, it gives us a snapshot at a moment in time of how boys are feeling about life.

Celebration Assembly, held on Wednesdays, is also a super opportunity for boys of different ages to collaborate. On Wednesday, some of our Year 8s teamed up with boys in Years 3, 4 & 5 to talk through the wonderful work the latter have achieved since the start of term. For example, in Year 3 Dylan J and Bear M demonstrated their new Humanities knowledge with facts about modern day Egypt; Rafe C and James T in Year 4 were celebrated for their English work on extending sentences; and Ethan H was praised for his excellent research on Sherlock Holmes, since joining Year 5.

This term has already been very busy with parent events and thank you for the wonderful support you have all shown for the likes of Moulsfest, Old Moles Day, football and rugby matches and the various year group information meetings. On Friday 6th October, the Parents Association is hosting the Headmaster’s Quiz – no prizes for guessing who the quizmaster will be! This is always a really fun evening and an especially good way for parents to connect at the beginning of the academic year, with a delicious Moulsford curry thrown in. I believe fifteen tables are currently booked and if you’d like to join the fun, please click here. Thank you to the Year 8 boys who will kindly be helping on the night.
