Literary activities around the school

This week was World Book Week and in the National Year of Reading our theme was Graphic Novels and Comics. Graphic novels are hugely popular and have been recognised by the National Literacy Trust as a gateway to reading success.

To go along with this, our dressing up theme for Years 3 to 8 was ‘Where’s Wally in Moulsford’ with pupils and staff coming to school in stripy tops and bobble hats! The children in Pre-Prep dressed as their favourite book character and they all looked spectacular.

The Big Read
The ever-popular Big Read took place in the theatre on Wednesday, with the children from Years 3 to 8 having the opportunity to read together in the theatre whilst relaxing on beanbags, teddy bears, sleeping bags, cushions and duvets! It was lovely for the staff to be able to enjoy spending some time quietly reading with the pupils too.

Escape Room
All Pre-School classes took on ‘Beat the Library Escape Room’, where groups had to complete as many tasks as possible in 20 minutes.

World Book Day Assembly
The annual World Book Day Assembly once again celebrated all of the fantastic literary activities that take place within school and introduced this year’s graphic novels theme. The winners of the class poems were announced with 3A taking the Junior prize for their entry and 8E winning the trophy for the seniors (with honourable mentions for 6B and 7D). We celebrated the Word Millionaires (and multi-millionaires) and Reading Stars and it was a great way to kick start the day.

World Book Day Workshops
There were several activities for the children in the Prep School to enjoy, beginning with the house writing competition where pupils had to write and illustrate their own graphic novel. Houses then left their writing tasks to enjoy a Scavenger Hunt to follow clues and find ten items around the school. Wandering around were some special guests - Woof, Wenda, Odlaw and Wizard Whitebeard and spotting them earned extra points. Finally, it was Anonymous Readers and Illustrators where children chose the book rather than the author and then went and listened to a story or drew illustrations, depending on the title chosen.

Fun in the Pre-Prep
In Pre-Prep, after a fantastic Assembly from Pumas, the children took part in a carousel of fun themed creative activities in their houses designed to further inspire a love of reading. Year 8 also visited them to run a Where's Wally Scavenger Hunt, finding all of Wally's items and characters to win house prizes!

World Book Week is a true celebration of reading – thank you to Mrs Manning and everyone who made it special!
