Assistant Head Academic's Blog: Enrichment in the Curriculum

Head's Blog

One of the defining strengths of life at Moulsford is the richness of opportunity available to our pupils beyond the classroom. While academic learning remains at the heart of what we do, it is the breadth of experiences alongside it that helps to shape confident, curious and well-rounded young people. The coming weeks provide a particularly vivid snapshot of this, with an extraordinary range of activities taking place across the school.

Educational visits continue to play a central role in bringing our topics and learning to life. Our Year 6 pupils recently visited the MAD Museum and Shakespeare's Birthplace, deepening both their understanding of design and their connection to literary heritage, and Year 4 pupils enjoyed exploring the imaginary world of Harry Potter marvelling in the creativity, set building and storytelling through the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Pre-Prep also have trips planned this half term with Year 1 visiting PizzaExpress to support their learning in a fun and practical context, while Reception are heading to Bucklebury Farm to enrich their understanding of the natural world.

Beyond trips, pupils are benefiting from a curriculum that extends well into co-curricular and partnership opportunities. Some Year 5 pupils will take part in a challenge day at Pangbourne College, while some Year 6 pupils will represent Moulsford at the Winton Cup humanities event hosted by Stowe School. These events encourage collaboration, intellectual curiosity and the confidence to engage with peers beyond our own school community.

Sport and physical wellbeing remain a cornerstone of school life. From tennis groups heading out for coaching and fixtures, to the much-anticipated interhouse triathlon for Years 3 to 8 in glorious sunshine today, and participation in events such as the Bradfield Triathlon, pupils are continually encouraged to challenge themselves physically and develop resilience, teamwork and determination.

The creative and performing arts are equally vibrant. With the upcoming Pop Vocals Concert, Senior Performing Arts Showcases, music examinations and LAMDA assessments all taking place, pupils have countless opportunities to perform, refine their skills and express themselves with confidence. Year 6 pupils are also preparing for their Greek play (written by the Moulsford staff), a highlight that brings together drama, language and collaboration in a memorable way. It also serves as a good example of how our staff go above and beyond in tailoring positive opportunities at Moulsford.

In addition, we are delighted to welcome visiting authors Nathanael Lessore for Years 7 and 8 and Lucy Rowland for our Pre-Prep pupils, further inspiring a love of reading and writing across the school.

Our commitment to pastoral development and independence is reflected in opportunities such as the upcoming Year 4 trial boarding experience, something akin to a “great sleepover,” but with real benefits in building confidence, friendships and adaptability. Similarly, Year 7 and 8 pupils will take part in joint social events with pupils from Queen Anne's School, fostering social confidence and broadening horizons.

What stands out most is not simply the number of opportunities but the spirit with which pupils embrace them. Whether on stage, on the sports field, in the classroom or beyond, Moulsford pupils are encouraged to “have a go,” to discover new interests and to develop the confidence to step outside their comfort zones.

These experiences are integral to a genuinely rounded education. They help pupils to build character, resilience and enthusiasm for learning in all its forms. At Moulsford, we are proud to offer such a wide-ranging programme and even prouder of the way our pupils seize these opportunities with energy and enthusiasm.

Finally, the MPA Summer Party Committee is working incredibly hard behind the scenes and the event on Saturday 20th June promises to be another not-to-be-missed showstopper. In order to give the organisers the opportunity to finalise arrangements, if you have not bought tickets yet then now is a great opportunity to do so, with the Bank Holiday ahead of you to start raiding your wardrobe for rhinestone outfits and cowboy hats!
