Daniel G wins Oxfordshire Under 10 Championships

In July, Daniel G in Year 6 achieved his Green 1* rating which is the highest Lawn Tennis Association rating for under 10s.  This is achieved by winning matches against opponents of equal or better ability in county or regional grade competitions.

Daniel competed in a number of matches over the summer and was then seeded number 1 for the Oxfordshire County Closed tournament, which was a target Daniel had set himself earlier in the season.  In the County Closed competition Daniel’s first two matches were relatively easy wins, winning both matches 2 sets to love (4-0, 4-1).  Daniel then faced his friend Otto in the semi-finals who was number 4 seed.  Daniel again won the match 2 sets to love with the same scores as his previous matches.

In the final he had to play the number 2 seed Benedick, who is also Daniel’s doubles partner and the boy Daniel lost to in last year’s final.  The first set was a close affair with both boys rarely managing to hold on to their own serve.  This resulted in the first set going to a tie break at 4-4.  The tie break did not start too well for Daniel as he found himself 4-2 down, but managed to dig deep and come back to win the tie break 8-6 to take the first set 5-4.  The second set was less nail biting with Daniel holding his own serve and then managing to break Benedick’s serve to win the first two games of the set.  Both boys then broke each other’s serve again making the score 3-1 to Daniel.  After some long rallies and excellent tennis, Daniel took the set 4-2 resulting in another 2 sets to love win (5-4, 4-2).

After two years of being the runner up, Daniel was crowned Under 10 County Champion.  Congratulations Daniel on your achievement and hard work.
