Year group workshops

Our theme for World Book Day this year was ‘My Favourite Book’ and staff spent the morning running workshops with the boys in Years 3 to 8, based around this theme.

Year 3 focussed on the World Book Day book, ‘Football School- Football Stories’’ by Alexander Bellos and Ben Lyttleton, completing some fun activities based around the book such as creating their own mascot, devising their own sporting philosophy and designing a new football trophy.  The boys seemed to really enjoy the tasks set and the teachers were very proud of their work! Well done boys.

Year 4 welcomed author of the ‘The Playdate Adventures’ series, Emma Beswetherick (who just happens to be Mrs Symonds’s sister). Emma explained to Year 4 the process by which an initial idea for a story becomes a printed book on a book shelf. The boys were fascinated and asked lots of brilliant questions. Big thanks to Emma and all the Year 4 boys for a very enjoyable morning.

In Year 5 the boys worked on illuminated scripts creating work using the alphabet, initials or the first line or page from a favourite book. There was some really creative work completed and the boys enjoyed the challenge.

The boys in Year 6 created a popup book page of their favourite book, learning skills to create pop up pages and then decorating them to make a scene or overall theme of their chosen book. They all seemed to really enjoy it and took to the challenge beautifully and have created some really exciting work.

In Year 7 boys had the option to design a book cover for their favourite book, do a video recording highlighting what they like about their chosen book, create a poster or storyboard to encapsulate the story, do a portrait of a key character or write a summary of why this is their favourite book. There was some very detailed work produced and the staff enjoyed seeing it all.

Year 8 focused on Dr Seuss and in groups had to come up with a storyline, illustrations and live performance in the style of Dr Seuss. The boys had great fun putting these together and there were some highly amusing poems. Congratulations to Felix B, James L, Jools B, Oliver C and Nathan VB who came up with the winning poem about the adventures of a Sloth, read beautifully by James L! Year 8 also recorded a whole year group version of ‘cat in the hat’ that was played to the whole school over the course of the day.

Thank you so much to the staff, boys and parents for making it such a successful day.
