Year 1 Become Pizzaiolos!

Year 1 donned their aprons and pizzaiolo hats to engage in some culinary training at Pizza Express.  Chef Alex from Italy reminded the children of good hygiene practice, and the pizza making began: shaping, pressing and flipping to make the dough; followed by moulding into the pizza pans; and finally the spreading of the special Pizza Express tomato sauce and the sprinkling of the mozzarella cubes.  With our taste buds thoroughly excited, we watched as the pizzas made their way into the ovens.

Alex explained that the Pizza Margherita was a true classic created for Queen Margherita of Italy when she visited Naples with her husband King Umberto I in the 19th century.  The colours were to represent the Italian flag (red tomato, white mozzarella and green basil).  We identified the different food groups in the pizzas, and then with the pizzas boxed and emitting a delicious aroma, we said a heartfelt 'Thank You' to Alex and headed back to school to eat them while they were still hot.

What a lovely morning; and our thanks go to Pizza Express for this community-based initiative that has supported our learning about a balanced diet.
