Head's Blog

In this issue of ‘Word from the Head’, I share the platform with Assistant Head Pastoral Vicki Rae, who is writing on failure and The Pride of Moulsford.

Over the summer, I spent time reflecting on how we celebrate and reward our pupils here at Moulsford. It became clear to me that one of my key focuses this term should be to revisit how we recognise the efforts and values our pupils demonstrate every day.

With that in mind, I chose to open the year with an assembly on a perhaps unexpected theme: failure. At first glance, this might seem a strange way to start, but I encouraged everyone to think of failure as something far more positive; as our First Attempt In Learning.

The way we respond to failure, both our own and others’, says a great deal about our character. Moments when someone forgets their lines, misses a penalty, or takes a tumble outside are opportunities not for judgement, but for compassion and support. These are the moments when our school values are truly lived.

Staff were eager to share their own stories of failure, with each one reinforcing the same message. Failure is part of the journey, not the end. It helps us grow, strengthens our resilience, and teaches us to persevere. In fact, it’s often the ‘not giving up’ that marks the real success.

I am also delighted to introduce a new weekly award: The Pride of Moulsford. This will be presented in our whole-school assembly and is open to nominations from both pupils and staff. It will recognise any pupil who embodies our school values — those who show kindness by supporting others, courage by facing challenges and standing up for what is right, and curiosity by asking thoughtful questions and inspiring those around them.

Through this award, I hope to recognise the everyday actions that reflect the values we expect at Moulsford.

In terms of pride, a reminder that all pupils from Pre-Prep to Year 7 should be coming to school dressed in the correct uniform. This includes a blazer for every pupil and caps or berets for Pre-Prep children through to Year 7. We would be grateful for your support in ensuring that your children take pride in their appearance at school.
